In Sun sets over your fragments of narrative combine to form a poem-like whole. Truths and half truths, memories and dreamt images betray something more abject than the lilac velvet would have you believe – the saccharine façade teases you. Through a broad approach to the photographic, Pennanen harnesses the strange affective qualities of her materials, engendering an eerie uncertainty that still remains playful. Partially inspired by the writings of Lacan, Bataille and Kristeva, the exhibition is laden with symbols, mirrors and eggs, works are conscious of their status as ‘something other’. They demonstrate a certain duality, feelings of desire mingle with yuck. The installation strives for this bothness or inbetweenness, like the last moment of sunset before the darkness sinks in.
